ABOUT THE EDITOR
John A. Dean assumed the editorship of Lange's Handbookof Chemistry in 1968 withthe Eleventh Edition. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Chemistry atthe Universityof Tennessee at Knoxville. The author of nine major chemistry referencebooks usedthroughout the world, John Dean's research interests, reflected in over105 researchpapers and scholarly publications, include instrumental methods ofanalysis, flame emissionand atomic absorption spectroscopy, chromatographic and solvent extractionmethods,and polarography. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Chemistry fromtheUniversity of Michigan at Ann Arbor. In 1974, he was given the Charles H.Stone Awardby the Carolina-Piedmont Section of the American Chemical Society. In1991, he wasawarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Society for AppliedSpectroscopy; bythe same organization he was awarded Honorary Membershipin 1997.
