ABOUT THE EDITOR
John A. Dean assumed the editorship of Lange's Handbookof Chemistry in 1968 with
the Eleventh Edition. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Chemistry atthe University of Tennessee at Knoxville. The author of nine major chemistry referencebooks used throughout the world, John Dean's research interests, reflected in over105 research papers and scholarly publications, include instrumental methods ofanalysis, flame emission and atomic absorption spectroscopy, chromatographic and solvent extractionmethods, and polarography. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Chemistry fromthe University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. In 1974, he was given the Charles H.Stone Award by the Carolina-Piedmont Section of the American Chemical Society. In1991, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Society for AppliedSpectroscopy; by the same organization he was awarded Honorary Membershipin 1997.
