Preface to the secondedition
The original edition ofthe Handbookof Adhesion was published in 1992. It was intendedto fill a gap between thenecessarily simplified treatment of the student textbook and thefull andthorough treatment of the research monograph and review article. Itprovidedconcise and authoritative articles covering many aspects of the scienceand technologyassociated with adhesion and adhesives. The articles were structuredin such a way, withinternal cross-references and external literaturereferences, that the reader could build upa broader and deeper understanding,as the particular need required.
Since the first editionwent out of print, there has been a continuing demand for the
book, and Wiley agreedto publish a second edition, again under my editorship. The shortarticle formatof the first edition has been retained. Some of the articles are derivedfromthe earlier edition and have been revised and updated where needed. Thereare many newarticles covering developments that have risen in prominence in theintervening years.
An increasingenvironmental awareness is one of the developments throughout thisperiod: timeand again authors draw attention to the environmental impact ofadhesivetechnologies. It is interesting to note that, in the period 1992–2004,sales of adhesivesand sealants in the United States has increased by around 5%per annum. Sales in otherindustrialized countries are likely to be similar. These are the sorts of figures for growthabout which business corporationsboast in their annual reports. Yet, in the same period, many indicators ofenvironmental well-being continued to deteriorate. Atmospheric carbondioxideconcentrations increased by 5% and “extreme” weather events becamemorefrequent. In both the United States and Europe, the incidence of asthmadoubled.
This raises somedisconcerting issues. Are our endeavours to reduce organic vapour
emissions, to eliminatechromates, and so forth (repeated, mutatis mutandis, throughoutindustry),really sufficient to prevent an environmental crisis? Perhaps seriousquestionsof sustainability and of limits to growth now have to be facedseriously.
The task of assemblingnearly 250 articles from well over 60 authors has been formidableand I amgrateful to the publishers and, in particular, to Jenny Cossham and LynetteJamesfor their patience and to the authors for their cooperation. Anincreasingly dirigiste managementculture has spread from industry into the quasi-privatizedcivil service and now intouniversities. This brings with it a narrow perceptionof the role and purpose of science andof research, which makes the productionof material for a book such as this increasinglydifficult. Its achievement is acredit to the dedication of authors involved.
In an attempt to keepthe style of the book uniform throughout, all the articles havebeen subject toeditorial modification, so the final form of the text, including errors, istheEditor’s responsibility. There are a few first edition articles that, for avariety of reasons, the original authors were not able to update. I have revisedthese myself and indicatedthis by placing an asterisk (*) after the originalauthors’ names.
