What is the difference between stage and tray in a column? isn't it same?
first of all understand what is a stage..an equillibrium stage is one in which we allow intimate contact between two streams between which mass transfer is supposed to take place..it is called an equillibrium stage because the leaving streams are supposed to be in equillibrium(which doesn't happen in reality and hence the stage efficincy comes in picture)..it provides the suitable residence time for this transfer to take place..once the two leaving streams reach equillibrium no matter however long residence time is provided you are not going to achieve any further separation..
Now a tray could be one such means of providing this intimate contact..
you can also provide such an intimate contact by using packings..
liquid liquid extraction uses a mixer settler arrangement for providing the same..
