Summary
It is well known that grey/blue hydrogen is traditionally produced from steam methane reforming and the byproduct is carbon dioxide the main contributor to climate change. On the other hand, green hydrogen is defined as hydrogen produced by splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen using renewable electricity. Green hydrogen is likely to play a critical role in enabling the global transition to sustainable energy and net-zero emissions.
Typical water-splitting technologies include Alkaline Electrolysis Cell (AEC), Anion Exchange Membrane/Alkaline Electrolyte Membrane (AEM), Polymer Electrolysis Membrane/Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM), and so forth. Alkaline electrolyzers have a lower cost compared to PEM electrolyzers and this makes them suitable for scale-up to large-scale hydrogen production.
Example File Details
The Aspen Plus flowsheet model of an industrial-scale alkaline electrolyzer is presented in this article. The core unit is the alkaline electrolyzer (STACK), where the water is split into hydrogen and oxygen in the cathode and anode respectively. The water that comes out from both electrodes is recycled and fed back into the electrolyzer together with a freshwater makeup stream (H2O-IN).
The products from the electrolyzer are fed to Flash2 separators to separate hydrogen and oxygen from water, while the water then is recycled. A stoichiometric reactor (CATCON) is to convert the oxygen in the hydrogen production stream (H2-OUT) to water with 100% conversion.
In the end, a component separator (PSA) block is used to obtain pure hydrogen.
This model uses the new native Electrolyzer unit operation available in V14 that can be used to model the electrolysis of water to generate hydrogen.
This file is an updated version of the file shipped in the Examples directory.
